Anurag Kashyap, a cutting edge director, writer & producer, who has served contemporary audiences, creating a cult is often known as the Quentin Tarantino of Indian Cinema.

Anurag received his big break as a co-writer in Ram Gopal Varma's murder drama Satya in 1998 which was a critical and commercial success. Later he made his directorial debut with Paanch, which was never released in theatres due to censorship issues.

In 1999, he made a short film, titled Last Train to Mahakali for television.

Anurag started working on Black Friday in 2004, a film based on the namesake book by Hussain Zaidi about the 1993 Bombay blasts. The film got censorship clearance in 2007 and was released after two years of receiving universal acclaim.

His next directorial was Dev. D, a contemporary take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel Devdas which was the twelfth film adaptation of the novel. It received positive reviews and strong box office results.

In 2008, Mumbai Cutting, an anthology film, was his next directorial venture which consisted of eleven short films made by eleven directors. He directed one of the short films and it premiered at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in the same year.

In 2011, Anurag directed That Girl in Yellow Boots, a thriller starring Kalki Koechlin who also co-wrote the film with him. The film was screened at many festivals including the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, the 67th Venice International Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, and the London Indian Film Festival.

Anurag's next directorial was Gangs of Wasseypur, a two-part crime saga centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad in 2012 which was screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight, London Indian Film Festival, the Toronto film festival, and the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, becoming a box office success.

Anurag also wrote dialogues for many films including Paisa Vasool & Yuva in 2004, Water & Main Aisa Hi Hoon in 2005 and Mixed Doubles in 2006.

His other movies include, the box office hit  Raman Raghav 2.0 in 2016, Manmarziyaan in 2018, Ghost Stories, Choked & AK vs AK in 2020.

Anurag has given a big break to promising actors like Abhay Deol,  Mahi Gill,  Richa Chaddha & Nawazuddin Siddiqui through challenging roles in his films.

Since 2009, he has also been involved as a producer and produced films like Shaitan,  Aiyyaa, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, The Lunchbox, Shahid, Hasee Toh Phasee, Queen, and Saand Ki Aankh to name a few.

He has also acted in a few films like Shagird, Black Friday, Happy New Year, No Smoking, and Akira among others.

  • He received the ‘Screen Award for Best Screenplay’ with Saurabh Shukla for the film Satya.
  • Anurag received a ‘Special Jury Award’ for Last Train to Mahakali in 2000.
  • He shared the ‘Best Story’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ awards at the 56th Filmfare Awards with Vikramaditya Motwane for Udaan in 2011.
  • Anurag was awarded the ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
  • He was conferred with the ‘Yash Bharti Award’ by the government of Uttar Pradesh in 2016.
  • He served as a jury member for several international film festivals such as Venice Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival & Busan International Film Festival.
